To be in or aspiring to a middle leadership or management position. To have a reasonable standard of written English (there is significant reading and assignment-writing to complete).
Dates and Times
The qualification consists of a range of units covering core management skills – such as understanding how to organise and delegate – plus skills in communication, team leadership, change, innovation and managing people and relationships. The breadth of the unit material allows the certificate to be tailored to meet the needs of different individuals and employers.
Exams and Assessment
For each unit you will be required to provide written evidence to satisfy the learning outcomes. This will consist of a range of formal written academic assignments, logs and presentations. You will be required to produce a portfolio of appropriate evidence along with supporting documentation.

- Employment in a team leader or management role
- Employment as an associate teacher/trainer
- Certificate in Education and Training (CET)
- Certificate in Education or Professional/Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

This level 3 Diploma in First Line Management has been developed for junior managers, supervisors and first line managers who have operational responsibility for a defined area of activity and who wish to build on and develop their existing management skills and knowledge. This qualification gives junior managers the communication and motivational skills to help improve operational efficiency.
When will I start the course and how long will it take?
This course has various start dates throughout the academic year allowing you to join the course at the beginning of each module.
The course is delivered on a Wednesday evening from 5.00pm to 9.00pm.
Dependent upon demand, this course can be delivered to employees directly within the workplace. This is done with more intensive study over a shorter period of time. More information is available upon enquiry.
What will I study?
Taught by industry professionals, you will explore the key concepts and elements of first line management. The following seven modules will be covered:
- Developing yourself as a First Line Manager
- Recruitment and selection
- Resource planning
- Meeting stakeholder needs
- Identifying development opportunities
- Improving team performance
- Managing information and communication
How is it assessed?
You will complete a written assignment at the end of each module. No examinations are required.
Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?
Ideally, you should have already achieved a level 2 qualification although your previous experience will also be considered when applying for this course.
What are the course fees?
The total cost of this course is £1,987. This includes the registration fee for CMI membership.
There are a number of flexible payment options available including an interest-free payment plan with a monthly direct debit payment, your employer may be willing to fund your course and we can invoice them directly.
If you are aged 19 - 23 and this is your first full level 3 qualification, 100% of your course fees will be covered. More information can be provided upon application.
If you are aged 19 or over, you could also choose to apply for a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan to cover part of your course fees. An Advanced Learner Loan enables you to study now, pay later. Loan eligibility isn't dependent on income or employment status and there is no credit check. Loan repayments don't start until you have finished your course and earn over £21,000 per year. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?
Upon successful completion of this course you will hold a nationally recognised CMI qualification, valued by employers. You will be qualified to be able to register as an Associate Grade member of CMI.
You may choose to progress on to our CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership qualification, or pursue other academic routes with us.
