Tasks:

The basic idea of the content of this thesis work is described below. The details, however, will be discussed with the thesis worker in the beginning of the thesis work.

Normally power transfer in a VSC (voltage source converter) HVDC transmission is performed through current control. When the connected a.c. network is very weak (low short circuit current), however, this method may not be very robust. Because of that it is desirable to perform an evaluation of alternative control methods for these cases.

Performance of the different approaches may well vary with the different network strengths and operating points. Ideally, the desired end result is to have a good set of base solution so that we can easily choose solution in a future projects without having to spend time on controller tuning and settings.

Requirements:

Electric Power Engineering or Engineering Physics.
Knowledge within power system analysis, control theory and power system simulation software such as for example PSSE or PSCAD.

You will be a part of the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) System Development department, which is responsible for electrical design of HVDC plants. Rating studies, specification of high voltage equipment, definition of concepts for control and protection design as well as system studies are part of our scope of work.

Tasks:

In recent years, a number of voltage source converter (VSC) based HVDC projects have been commissioned and more such projects are coming up all over the world. In some cases, customers are expressing interest for added features of HVDC control systems. In some countries, an increasing interest on High Power VSC-HVDC converters is observed. A positive trend for installation of VSC based multi-terminal DC (MTDC) grids for renewable energy integration and for power trade between different countries is also visible. Such rapid advancements in HVDC technology constantly set new targets for research and development - both in industry and in academia. The Masters’ thesis projects below, aim to address some of the practical challenges associated with upcoming trends in HVDC systems mentioned above:

1) Practical aspects of grid impedance estimation for HVDC applications
2) DC current control of series connected VSC
3) Development of an open PSCAD model for HVDC VSC MMC
4) Optimization of Current Limiting Reactor for MTDC Applications
5) Optimization of DC Chopper in MTDC grid

Requirements:

We believe that you are an M.Sc Electrical Engineering student with good knowledge in power systems, and an interest in HVDC technology. It is also good if you are interested in control systems and familiar with PSCAD and/or SIMULINK.

• Period: February – June (20 weeks)
• This master thesis is equivalent to 30 ECTS/högskolepoäng(hp)
• We’ll have openings for three students. Each of them will be assigned to one of the topics mentioned above which they will carry out individually with the support of the supervisor from our side.
• The work will be carried out at Ludvika
