Conversely, miscommunication leads to delivery of invalid information hence decline in the productivity of the group. In severe cases, lack of effective communication promotes misunderstanding between the involved parties thus may end up in conflicts. In order for communication to hold and be effective, the mode of information transmission ought to be reliable, and this will deem complete upon the reception of the feedback. However, it is difficult to attain effective communication owing to various barriers that deem detrimental. The management of every organization should enact policies governing communication within the hierarchy of the group to avert the encroaching barriers.
Lack of trust
Trust is one of the fundamental elements of any successful team. Communicating in a group environment can be very challenging. An audience can contain several diverse groups the speaker must address and each of those groups can be geographically located anywhere in the world spanning multiple time zones. Several technologies exist to enhance communications in a group environment.
Conference calling is certainly one of the most popular methods for group communication. Although conference calling limits the groups’ communication to audio only, in businesses today, telephone land lines are in every office and in every cube. Many companies buy these phones with built-in speakerphones. For phones that do not have a built-in speakerphone, a device can be purchased separately to enable this feature. In recent years, cell phones are playing a big part with conference calling. Unlike land lines, cell phones enable the user to become mobile. Communicating with a group can take place while driving down the interstate or sitting on the beach. Many cell phones also offer a speaker phone. Many companies favor audio conference calling because it is by far the least expensive form of group communication.
However, there are many disadvantages to audio conference calling. The first is the loss of personal relations. When conference calling, the only thing heard is your colleague’s voice. If not conveyed well, remarks can be taken the wrong way and offend those involved in the conference call. Body language plays an important role in communications in which facial expressions and gestures will not be seen. An additional disadvantage is the quality of the call as more lines are added.
